The Smeaton property is situated in the centre of the Smeaton kimberlite trend.
Smeaton Property
The Smeaton property, which contains the Smeaton kimberlite, is situated in the Smeaton kimberlite belt, mid-way between the Snowden kimberlite group (De Beers Canada and partners), and the C28 kimberlite (Great Western Minerals Corp.). The property consists of 30 claims, with a total area of 10,624ha (26,252 acres). Exploration on the Smeaton property started in 1994, when a ground magnetic survey was carried out over an aeromagnetic target about 200 metres in diameter. In 1996 a single hole was drilled in the target, and intersected a total of 91.5 metres of kimberlite beneath 128 metres of overburden. A gravity survey was done over the kimberlite target in August 2000, and the results indicated that the kimberlite might be a larger target. Subsequently, three HQ size boreholes were drilled into bedrock within the gravity anomaly, approximately 250 metres to 500 metres west, south, and south-southeast from the original (1996) hole. Thin kimberlite beds were intersected in the three holes, but in older sediments than in the 1996 hole. The provenance of this older kimberlite is unknown, but suggests that the Smeaton kimberlite body formed through multiple eruptions, typical of other kimberlites in the district
In 2002, the original aeromagnetic coverage of the Smeaton property was reprocessed, with the result that seven additional magnetic anomalies were outlined. Several magnetic targets were located near the southeast end of the property proximal to the Snowden kimberlite cluster, and the rest follow in a roughly northwest direction along the regional kimberlite trend.
