STAR DIAMOND PROJECT - PLANT CONSTRUCTION COMPLETE
KIMBERLITE RECOVERY CONTINUES
George H. Read, Senior Vice President, Exploration, is pleased to report that the construction of the plant on the Star Diamond Project has been completed and that a significant quantity of kimberlite has been recovered from the shaft.
The construction of the 10 tonne per hour on-site Dense Media Separator ("DMS") processing plant has been completed and commissioning will commence as soon as the plant is winterized. The plant, manufactured by Bateman Engineering (South Africa), includes two stage crushing (jaw and cone), scrubbing, screening and dense media separation of heavy mineral concentrate, followed by X-ray Flow-sort and grease table diamond recovery. The plant will be protected from the elements inside an 80 by 30 metre Cover-All, which is currently being assembled over the plant. Heat from the plant power generator and two Herman-Nelson heaters will maintain a temperature of about 10º C inside the Cover-All. Plant commissioning engineers are scheduled to arrive from South Africa in mid November. Total commissioning time is anticipated to be two weeks.
Development continues in the concrete-lined shaft, which is currently at 140 metres below surface, having passed through the sediment-kimberlite interface at 107 metres. Some 1,500 tonnes of kimberlite have already been stockpiled in a secure area in preparation for batch processing through the 10 tonne per hour on-site DMS processing plant. The shaft is below the freeze-wall and, in compliance with mining regulations, a water pump station has been installed at the current level to accommodate minor water inflow. Recent BQ core drilling ahead of the shaft (to 250 metres below surface) indicates that no significant aquifers will be encountered and normal shaft sinking continues. In preparation for winter operations, the shaft headgear and bank area have been covered with insulated cladding and the hoist room has been winterized. The shaft will be sunk to 250 metres below surface and will produce some 5,000 tonnes of kimberlite while approximately 20,000 tonnes of kimberlite will be collected from lateral drifts. The shaft and lateral drifts will provide easy access to the kimberlite for future underground delineation drilling.
The aim of the Star Diamond Project is to recover and process 25,000 tons of kimberlite in order to produce a macrodiamond parcel of some 3,000 carats. This diamond parcel will be used for stone valuation purposes.
