Great Western Minerals Group Ltd.: Copper Hill Project-Exploration Results
Thursday December 14, 1:52 pm ET
SASKATOON, SASKATCHEWAN--(MARKET WIRE)--Dec 14, 2006 -- Great Western Minerals Group Ltd. (TSX VENTURE:GWG.V - News) (Other OTC:GWMGF.PK - News)
The Company is pleased to report the results of the systematic evaluation undertaken recently on the Copper Hill Project, located in Clark County, Nevada, 45 miles south of Las Vegas. The program to date includes a detailed ground magnetic survey, a Mobile Metal Ion ("MMI") soil geochemistry survey, and detailed geological mapping.
The 119 km ground magnetic survey covering an area 8 km x 3.5 km was carried out by Zonge Geoscience of Reno, Nevada to aid in the interpretation of the geological mapping and geochemistry in pediment covered areas.
The MMI survey (1,235 samples) identified two significant anomalies. The first is an extensive, 5 km long by 1.5 km wide, high-contrast gold ("Au") anomaly with associated lead ("Pb") and zinc ("Zn") in a largely pediment covered area. This feature trends northerly, occupies the eastern portion of the survey area and is interpreted to be the MMI geochemical signature of a major structural zone mineralized with Au and base metals.
The second anomalous zone is a coincident copper-molybdenum-gold-silver-cobalt ("Cu-Mo-Au-Ag-Co") response. This anomaly is approximately circular to ovoid in shape (approximately 1.5 km x 1.0 km) and is a discrete response separate and distinct from the very large Au anomaly to the east. The constituent elements in the circular anomaly are indicative of a buried Porphyry Copper/Gold-type target.
The geological mapping program has identified a rock sequence consisting of andesitic and dacitic volcanics intruded by microdiorite and quartz monzonitic stocks in an extensional environment typical of Nevada's Basin and Range geological province. Overprinting the host rocks are zones of intense advanced argillic alteration with patches of silica flooding and quartz-alunite replacement which are also indicative of Porphyry Copper/Gold environments.
Mapping has also identified an E-W trending structure in the northern part of the property which hosts a number of disseminated gold targets, quartz veins and stockworks in altered volcanics. This structure is co-incident with the northern part of the strong Au geochemical anomaly. Along the eastern side of the property, in a largely pediment covered area, is a zone with several pits and shafts hosted by strongly altered volcanic within the north south trending Au-rich geochemical anomaly.
This work has identified several high-priority targets which will be followed up by additional MMI geochemical sampling and rock chip geochemistry surveys to detail the anomalies. An extensive IP geophysical survey targeted at delineating the deeper Porphyry Cu/Au target and the near surface disseminated gold targets will also be carried out. Specific drill targets will then be identified.
"This work significantly advances the project and confirms that it has real merit", says Gary Billingsley, Chairman. "The geophysical, geochemical, and geological evidence strongly indicate the presence of a large Porphyry copper/gold system as well as a major gold-bearing structural zone to the east-this will be a very exciting project to drill".
John G. Pearson, MSc., P.Geo., is the qualified person working on the project.
Great Western Minerals Group Ltd. is a Saskatchewan, Canada-based mineral exploration and development company with a focus on strategic metals, in particular those used in alternative energy technologies. The Company is developing the Hoidas Lake rare earth project in northern Saskatchewan, now at the pre-feasibility study stage. The rare earth elements are critical to many alternative energy technologies like those used in hybrid vehicles. Copper is also a significant component of many alternative energy applications including hybrid vehicles. A typical hybrid car, for example, uses approximately 25 kg more copper than a conventional automobile, along with approximately 20 kg of rare earth elements. With the demand for "green" technologies increasing dramatically, it is becoming crucial that new sources of the metals used in these technologies be identified and developed now to ensure stability of supply in the future.
