7/18/2004 : Arend looking for much needed turn around
SONOMA, pre-race: The final race of the grueling 3-race NHRA western swing will take place this weekend north of San Francisco at Infineon Raceway with the 17th running of the Fram Autolite NHRA Nationals. This is the 15th stop on the 23-race 2004 NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series championship tour. It will be CMKXtreme Machine Funny Car driver Jeff Arend's first visit to the beautiful facility located in world famous wine country, and he hopes to be sipping champagne by the end of racing on Sunday.
"I'm really looking forward to competing in Sonoma," said Arend. "They've made some tremendous improvements to the track and we expect another large turnout of CMKX Share holders to support us while we're there."
Arend and crew chief Paul Smith have qualified the CMKXtreme Machine Corvette steadily this season, making the cut at nine of 10 races, but the pair are still searching for their first round win. The team is only 94 points out of the POWERade Top 15, despite missing four out of the 14 completed races, and a few round wins right now could vault the team to a solid 2004 points finish.
"Its important that we start winning rounds soon," said Arend. "We want to finish in the Top 15 this season and on a strong note, and start showing everyone that this team has what it takes to win races. We just need a little good fortune to help us get over the hump and start winning rounds on a regular basis. The CMKX team is working very hard, it just takes the right combination of luck and skill to be successful and we won't stop working until we find it."
