8/14/2004 : Mechanical gremlins spoil Cohen’s
BRAINERD, qualifying: Connie Cohen, the rider of the CMKXtreme Pro Stock Bike, failed to make the field at the 23rd annual Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals at Brainerd International Raceway. Cohen suffered mechanical problems during the first qualifying session Saturday that sidelined the CMKXtreme Suzuki for the remainder of the weekend.
Festivities at Brainerd began on Thursday with the Racers for Christ 5th annual Fish Fry, which was sponsored by CMKXtreme Machine Racing. Over a hundred racers and fans enjoyed the gathering, which featured exclusive local cuisine and entertainment by the “Puppet-Masters”.
Qualifying began Friday afternoon at the Lucas Oil Nationals and the CMKXtreme Suzuki was one of the first motorcycles down the track. Cohen laid down a 7.297 at 180.69 mph to finish the first session in the No. 12 position. She returned for her second attempt later in the afternoon and slowed to a 7.393 at 177.37 mph to finish the first day of qualifying in the No. 17 position.
Cohen began the final day of qualifying at Brainerd International Raceway on the outside looking in with two sessions remaining to make the 16-bike field. The CMKXtreme Pro Stock Bike was on a good run during the Saturday morning qualifying session but the bike suffered mechanical failure near half-track and Cohen slowed to a 9.825 at 86.44 mph, finishing the round in the No. 17 qualifying position. After returning to the pit area Cohen’s husband and crew chief, Marc, determined that the damage to the motor was terminal, and the team was finished for the weekend.
“I'm really disappointed with how things turned out for us this weekend,” said Cohen Saturday afternoon. “We really wanted to carry the momentum from qualifying in Sonoma with us here and make it two in a row, but the bike broke on the third qualifying run and we don’t have a spare motor prepared to replace it with. Its a shame because the fans here in Brainerd are great and we wanted to put on a good show for them.”<br>
“I want to thank all of the people who attended the Racers for Christ Fish Fry on Thursday,” added Cohen. “We had a really good turn out and it was a lot of fun. I also want to thank CMKX for their continued support. We plan to have a better outing in Memphis next weekend.”
