8/18/2004 : Cohen heads to Memphis determined to qualify for her second race of the season
MEMPHIS, pre-race: It took Connie Cohen 44 races before she qualified for her first NHRA national event in Sonoma three weeks ago, but it only took one race to snap her qualifying string in the super competitive class of Pro Stock Bike. The rider of the CMKXtreme Suzuki will once again battle for a spot in the 16-bike field at the 17th annual O'Reilly NHRA Mid-South Nationals this weekend at Memphis Motorsports Park.
Cohen comes into the Mid-South Nationals after suffering mechanical problems during the third qualifying session in Brainerd last weekend, sidelining the CMKXtreme Suzuki for the remainder of the weekend. Marc Cohen, Connie's husband and crew chief, has made all the necessary repairs to the bike and the pair are eager to attack the Memphis quarter-mile.
"We were really hoping to build on the momentum we picked up after qualifying in Sonoma, but Brainerd turned out to be a disappointing weekend for us," said Cohen. "We started off with a solid 7.29 but things went downhill from there. I think we'll be able to turn things around in Memphis. Marc has freshened things up in the motor and we want to make a solid showing heading into the U.S. Nationals."
The CMKXtreme Pro Stock Bike pit area has become a popular spot for fans and CMKX shareholders at the last couple of national events on the NHRA tour. "We really enjoy all the support we've received from shareholders across the country this season," Cohen said. "We've made a ton of new fans since CMKX has come on board and now it's important for us to show our gratitude with a good performance on the race track."
On Friday morning prior to qualifying, Cohen will join CMKXtreme team members Jeff Arend and Tony Bartone on a visit to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, where the threesome will visit with patients and donate CMKXtreme souvenirs to the hospital.
