10/4/2004 : Solid performance from the CMKXtreme Machine at the CARQUEST Nationals in Chicago
CHICAGO, post-race: Jeff Arend, veteran driver of the CMKXtreme Machine Funny Car, made some of the best runs of his career at the 4th annual CARQUEST Auto Parts NHRA Nationals at Route 66 Raceway. Despite keeping his current 13-race qualifying streak a live, the former NHRA Funny Car national event champion lost in the first round on Sunday an will now look forward to the team’s return to Maple Grove Raceway in Pennsylvania next weekend.
Sunday morning dawned cold and dry at the CARQUEST Nationals with another cloudless sky to compliment the crisp, made-for-football weather. Arend entered eliminations in the No. 14 position after qualifying for his 13th consecutive national event and his 15th race of the year with a stout 4.854 at a career-best speed of 320.36 mph. The driver of the CMKXtreme Machine would face Eric Medlen in the first round for the third time this season and Arend was definitely looking for a little redemption going into the race.
When Arend and Medlen finally took the green light, Arend left the starting line first with a .121 to .159 reaction time. The CMKXtreme Machine streaked to a solid 4.862 but Medlen drove by him to take the win with a stellar 4.807 at 322.96 mph. A malfunction with the timing system failed to register a speed on Arend’s run.
“The CMKX car was set up to run in the 4.80’s all weekend but we had a few mechanical problems and also lost the Friday night session to rain,” commented Arend. “We went out there an ran a nice 4.80 at a career-best speed on our last ditch qualifying run and came back and ran another 4.80 during eliminations. So can ask for much more than that, the CMKX team is running really well right now.”
“Everything’s looking good for the CMKX team at this point,” added Arend, “we just qualified for the quickest field in NHRA history and we have a good tune up on the CMKX car going into the final three races of the season.”<br>
With the 320.36-mph run during qualifying, Arend also reclaimed his spot as the ‘world’s fastest Canadian’.
