10/7/2004 : CMKXtreme Machine returns to Reading with the performance to win rounds READING, pre-race: CMKXtreme Machine Funny Car driver Jeff Arend is actually enthusiastic about returning to eastern Pennsylvania for the completion of the rain-delayed Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals. Arend scored his first NHRA Funny Car national event championship at Maple Grove Raceway with current CMKX crew chief Paul Smith back in 1996 and the pair would love to double up in Reading.
Arend enters the Lucas Oil Nationals riding a 13-race qualifying streak that extends back to April. The CMKXtreme Machine ran a pair of mid-4.80 elapsed times and qualified for the quickest field in NHRA history in Chicago last weekend. Arend recorded the fastest run of his career, a breathtaking 320.36-mph blast that established Arend as the fastest Canadian in history and also made his car the fastest Corvette in the world.
The CMKXtreme Machine team goes into the final three races of the season still hungry for a top 15 finish in the season-ending POWERade point standings. "Maple Grove is where I won my first national event so I always look forward to going back there," said Arend. "The weather is going to be cool so the track should be really quick. The fans there are a lot of fun and they should be in for a good race."
