10/7/2004 : HATCH CLOSING GAP TO CLINCH BACK-TO-BACK ASA SPEED TRUCK CHAMPIONSHIPS
UPLAND, California Lee Hatch drove his CMKXtreme.com ASA Speed Truck to a second place finish Saturday night at the Bullring at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Hatch qualified 10th with a 16.70 qualifying time after struggling with an engine problem. His determined yet patient driving style landed him with the All States Leasing Hard Charger Award for moving up eight positions in the race.
"We knew we were in trouble from the first practice," said Hatch. "The engine was flat throughout the power range. We weren’t able to find the problem by qualifying so we decided after qualifying 10th to modify our set-up and gear selection. We planned on just making it work and gathering as many points as possible tonight. I want to thank my team and Rich for all their hard work. My sponsor CMKXtreme.com was here tonight and I wanted to put on a great show for them. I m very happy with this second place finish!"
Starting 10th, Hatch had his work cut out for him to move through the middle of the field to the head of the pack. By lap 12, Hatch was running in the top-five and on lap 38 he made the successful pass on the No. 46 of Darren Young to land himself behind the leader, Vegas local Spencer Clark. Hatch would remain there to bring home his second 2nd place finish for the season along with 12 victories.
"Our strong point has always been handling not horsepower, replied Hatch. As the leaders faded throughout the race, we moved patiently into second place. Since Spencer Clark is out of the point s battle, I decided not to push the issue. I could get up on his rear bumper a few times but I just didn’t t have the power to complete the pass."
Hatch now has a 126-point lead over second-place Darren Young in the chase to accomplish back-to-back ASA Speed Truck Championships.
