10/9/2004 : Arend continues to keep his qualify streak alive
READING, qualifying: Jeff Arend extended his current qualifying streak to 14 races after making the field for the rain-delayed 20th annual Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals at Maple Grove Raceway in Pennsylvania. Arend qualified the CMKXtreme Machine Funny Car in the No. 14 position and will face No. 3 qualifier Ron Capps in the first round of eliminations on Sunday for the first time this season.
Arend continued his torrid 4.80 pace from last week in Chicago during his first qualifying attempt Friday afternoon. The CMKXtreme Machine roared to a 4.881 at 309.13 mph and the native Canadian finished the first session in the No, 4 position. On his second qualifying run Friday evening the CMKXtreme Machine shook the tires around the 100-foot mark and Arend wisely shut it down, coasting to a 10.797 at 79.51 mph to finish the first day of qualifying at the Lucas Oil Nationals in the No, 9 spot.
The weather for Saturday’s final day of qualifying was cool and overcast, ideal conditions for optimum performance from the 7.000 horsepower Funny Car’s. Arend remained consistent on his third qualifying attempt as the CMKXtreme Machine recorded a 4.910 at 314.61 mph and the 41-year-old driver finished the third session qualified No. 12.
The CMKXtreme Machine team was lined up in the staging lanes for their final qualifying attempt when the team decided to pull out of line. “Before the first run today the team went through a big thrash working on some things we normally don’t have to deal with,” explained Arend. “We discovered a problem with one of our motors, so once we knew that we were definitely in the show we skipped the last qualifying session in order to build another motor for tomorrow because we expect to go some rounds.”
“We did exactly what we wanted to do, make a nice strong run right out of the trailer,” said Arend, “and that put us in the position to try a few things with the car to see what would work and what wouldn’t. We’re definitely getting a better handle on the tune up.”
