10/21/2004 : Arend and the CMKXtreme team looking to shine on The Strip
LAS VEGAS, pre-race: It's been over six months since Jeff Arend literally burst back into competition in Funny Car on the POWERade Drag Racing Series tour. The 41-year-old native Canadian returned to the quarter-mile wars in Las Vegas back in April but a licensing snafu kept him from competing. Arend will be looking to put all that behind him when he return's this weekend to 'The Strip" at Las Vegas Motor Speedway to compete at fourth annual ACDelco Las Vegas NHRA Nationals, the second to last stop on the 2004 NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series tour.
Arend enters the Las Vegas Nationals riding an impressive 14-race qualifying streak than began in Chicago back in May. Since then, Arend has climbed to 16th in season long POWERade point standings, and is only 75 points from a top 15 finish. Quite an accomplishment considering the team has only competed in 18 of 21 completed national events this season with only one DNQ. It all goes back to the hard work of crew chief Paul Smith and the dedicated working crew of the CMKXtreme Machine Funny Car.
The ACDelco Las Vegas NHRA Nationals will mark Arend's 40th career start in Funny Car, dating back to his debut at the 1995 Gatornationals. The former Funny Car national event champion would love to earn another Wally before the season is through.
"The Las Vegas race is going to be special for the entire team," said Arend. "CMKX Chairman of the Board, Urban Casavant, is a Las Vegas resident and he plans to throw a healthy celebration during the weekend. We will have thousands of CMKX shareholders supporting us and we are going to try as hard as we can to qualify, win some rounds, and put on an exciting show for all of the Las Vegas fans."
In addition to the racing, Arend and CMKX teammates Connie Cohen and Tony Bartone will be visiting Sunrise Children's Hospital in Las Vegas on October 28, from 2-4 PM. The team is also planning a huge CMKX shareholders party for Saturday, October 30, with over 5,000 people expected to be involved in the festivities.
