PHOENIX, Sunday: Tony Bartone, driver of the Jim Dunn Racing/Got CMKX?/Lucas Oil Funny Car, was defeated in the first round on Sunday at 21st annual Checker Schuck's Kragen NHRA Nationals. Bartone made his third solid run of the weekend but it wasn't enough to defeat his opponent, Robert Hight.
The weather was beautiful for Sunday's eliminations at Firebird International Raceway, with a wisp of clouds and plenty of sunshine. The Jim Dunn Racing team was proud to announce in Phoenix that Smith Barney Citigroup has come aboard as an associate sponsor for the event. The team was also delighted to welcome CMKX Diamonds CEO and current Chairman of the Board, Urban Casavant and his wife Carolyn, who were in Phoenix to support the CMKX Racing operation.
Bartone entered Sunday's eliminations at the CSK Nationals in the No. 15 qualifying position and squared off against rookie Funny Car driver and No. 2 qualifier, Robert Hight. They were the fourth pair of Funny Cars to roll into the starting beams during the first round, with Bartone in the right lane. The pair left together at the flash of green but Hight pulled away for the victory with a 4.752 at 327.51 mph to Bartone's consistent 4.967 at 312.28 mph.
Bartone was optimistic about the performance of the Got CMKX?/Lucas Oil Funny Car despite the early exit. “It was disappointing to lose in the first round but we are excited that we're starting to turn things around,” said Bartone, a former NHRA Alcohol Funny Car world champion. “We're happy that we are moving in the right direction.”<br>
The next race for Bartone and the Jim Dunn Racing/Got CMKX?/Lucas Oil Funny Car will be the NHRA Mac Tools Gatornationals in Gainesville, Florida, March 17-20.
