GAINESVILLE, Saturday: CMKXtreme Machine Funny Car driver Jeff Arend marked his return to the track where he made his debut in 1995 with a successful qualifying effort on Saturday. Arend qualified for his second race of the year at the 36th annual NHRA Mac Tool Gatornationals and will face Tommy Johnson Jr. in round one on Sunday.
Arend and the CMKXtreme Racing team entered Saturday’s final day of qualifying from the No. 18 position with two shots to make the 16-car field. The CMKXtreme blasted to a solid 4.887 at 304.56 mph on Arend’s third qualifying run and it held up for the 15th qualifying position on the final Funny Car eliminations ladder.
“Things are looking pretty good going into tomorrow,” said Arend. “Friday was a difficult day for everyone, and then today conditions were completely different. We went right down the track on the first run today and we even dropped a cylinder so it probably would have been even quicker. On the second run today we tried to step it up a little bit but we’re still working on the handling problem so it drifted out of the groove a little bit. It’s still working a lot better than in Phoenix. We’re learning with every lap and we’re getting things sorted out better with every run.
Arend and the CMKXtreme Racing team will face No. 6 qualifier Tommy Johnson Jr. during the first round of eliminations on Sunday.
