HOUSTON, qualifying: Tony Bartone, driver of the Jim Dunn Racing/Got CMKX?/Lucas Oil Funny Car, enjoyed one of his best qualifying efforts of the young NHRA season at the 18th annual NHRA O’Reilly Spring Nationals in Texas. Bartone used a solid 4.88 to qualify in the No. 10 position and will face Del Worsham in the first round of eliminations on Sunday.
The Spring Nationals featured two beautiful days for qualifying at Houston Raceway Park. Bartone joined CMKX teammates, Jeff Arend and Connie Cohen, on a trip to visit patients at the San Jacinto Methodist Hospital in Baytown prior to the beginning of qualifying on Friday, much to the delight of the patients and the hospital staff.
Bartone began qualifying with a cylinder-dropping 5.040 at 302.80 mph in the Got CMKX?/Lucas Oil Funny Car to finish the first session in the No. 7 position. The beautiful red, white and blue Jim Dunn Racing Monte Carlo improved to a 4.889 at 309.27 mph during the second session to finish the first day of qualifying in the No. 10 spot.
The third qualifying session at the Spring Nationals was held early Saturday afternoon under a nearly cloudless sky and in front of a huge throng of Texas drag racing faithful. The Got CMKX?/Lucas Oil Funny Car was in the right lane, where Bartone laid down a consistent 4.926 at 309.06 mph, to remain in the No. 10 qualifying position with one session remaining. Bartone overpowered the track on his final attempt and finished qualifying in the 10th spot.
“This has definitely been our strongest qualifying effort of the year,” Bartone stated. “I look forward to racing here in Houston tomorrow and hopefully the Got CMKX?/Lucas Oil Funny Car will go some rounds. We made it down the track three out of four times and in the third round we had the fourth quickest car. So I think tomorrow looks promising,” concluded Bartone.
