Bartone and the Got CMKX? team go out in round one at the Mile-High Nationals
DENVER, post-race: Got CMKX?/Lucas Oil Funny Car driver Tony Bartone was defeated in the first round on Sunday at the 26th annual Mopar Mile-High NHRA National at Bandimere Speedway.
Eliminations began at noon under plenty of sunshine and in front of a huge crowd. Bartone entered Sunday's elimination's in the No. 8 position. The 49-year-old New York native held lane choice over No. 9 qualifier Tommy Johnson Jr. going into round one.
Bartone and Johnson left the starting line with almost identical reaction times. Both cars were glued together until the Got CMKX?/Lucas Oil Monte Carlo's blower backfired and Johnson drove by him to take the win with a 5.192 at 294.37 mph to Bartone's 5.792 at 181.72 mph.
"It was a disappointing loss," said Bartone after the run. "We had a chance to go some rounds today but it just wasn't in the cards. The Got CMKX?/Lucas Oil crew did another outstanding job this weekend and Jim Dunn did a masterful job of tuning the car."
