Cohen comes up short in Brainerd
BRAINERD, post-race: CMKXtreme Machine Pro Stock Motorcycle racer Connie Cohen fell short in her effort to qualify for the 24th annual Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals at Brainerd International Raceway in Minnesota.
Cohen began her week in Minnesota by attending the 6th annual Hot Rod Sunday at Northwoods Assembly in Perham, Minnesota. Cohen was the featured racer at the event which included a food fair, pie auction and a remote controlled Monster Truck Race for the children. Cohen also took part the annual Racer's For Christ Fish Fry held Thursday evening at the Brainerd race track.
Cohen encountered troubles on her first qualifying run on Friday when the CMKXtreme Suzuki moved left toward the retaining wall and she was forced to abort the run. On her second attempt, Cohen went straight down the quarter-mile, recording a 7.321 at 180.24 mph to end the first day of qualifying in the No. 19 position.
Cohen had two more chances on Saturday to move her CMKXtreme Suzuki into the 16-bike field for Sunday's eliminations. The conditions were cool and overcast for her third qualifying attempt early Saturday morning. Cohen was in the left lane and once again the CMKXtreme Suzuki headed left toward the retaining wall, similar to her first attempt on Friday which was also in the same lane. Cohen was forced to lift, leaving her with one chance remaining to make the show.
Cohen made her best run of the weekend on her final attempt, a respectable 7.272 at 181.76 mph, but the Connecticut resident fell short of qualifying and will now look ahead to the event in Memphis next weekend.
"We really wanted to put the CMKXtreme Pro Stock Bike in the show," said Cohen after qualifying. "We have been trying so hard all season but we just haven't had any racing luck to speak of this year. We really enjoyed ourselves here in Minnesota. The fans are great and they have been very supportive. We'll continue to work as hard as we can and do our best to make the show in Memphis next weekend."
