Bartone beats the heat to qualify in Memphis
MEMPHIS, qualifying: Tony Bartone overcame the stifling late summer heat to qualify the Got CMKX?/ Lucas Oil/ SOOoo Good International Funny Car for the 18th annual O'Reilly Mid-South Nationals.
The heat was overwhelming at Memphis Motorsports Park, with plenty of sunshine and very little cloud cover throughout qualifying. Bartone went into Saturday's final pair of professional qualifying sessions looking to improve on his No. 16 position on the ladder.
Crew chief and car owner Jim Dunn's years of experience paid off for Bartone. The New York native drove the Got CMKX?/Lucas Oil Funny Car into the No. 14 spot with a 5.128 at 280.95 mph, the fourth quickest run of the session.
"We're very pleased with our qualifying effort here in Memphis," said Bartone. "The conditions here were brutal for everyone and it's very tough to overcome. I want to thank the entire Jim Dunn Racing team for their hard work. We'll be looking to go some rounds during eliminations tomorrow."
