Arend pleased with the effort of the CMKXtreme team in Chicago
JOLIET, qualifying: CMKXtreme Machine Funny Car driver Jeff Arend qualified for his eighth race of the season on Saturday at the 8th annual CARQUEST Auto parts NHRA Nationals in Illinois. This is Arend's 43rd career NHRA national event in Funny Car and he will face Phil Burkart Jr. in round one on Sunday.
A huge crowd was on hand Friday for the first day of professional qualifying at Route 66 Raceway. Arend created a good base line with a solid opening run of 4.959 at 303.43 mph to finish the first session in the No. 9 position. After a long rain delay, crew chief Paul Smith tuned up the CMKXtreme Machine Monte Carlo for Friday's evening run and Arend roared to a 4.823 at 310.27 mph to finish the day in the top half of the field in the No. 8 spot.
On his third qualifying run, Arend smoked the tires several hundred feet off the starting line and coasted to a 9.978 at 80.36 mph to finish the session qualified in the No. 10 spot. Arend was on a good run on his final pass until he clicked it off early and coasted to the finish line. The 42-year-old Canadian finished qualifying in the No. 10 spot.
"The weekend has gone really well," said Arend following qualifying, "I wish my wife Windy and daughter Jenna were here to enjoy it. The great run we made on Friday night gave us a chance to test a little bit today and prepare for race day."
"Phil Burkart and I are really good friends, we talk to each other all the time and I'm glad that one of us is going to the second round tomorrow. I want to send a special thank you to Deli Dogs for supplying the team with food this weekend. I also want to send a big thank you to Urban Casavant for all of his great support and I also want to send my condolences to Vinny Ferrone, who lost his Father-in-Law this week and to Bill Walters, who lost his sister this week also. Hopefully we can win a couple of rounds in their honor.
