Bartone reaches the quarterfinals in St. Louis
ST. LOUIS, Sunday: Tony Bartone piloted the Jim Dunn Racing/Got CMKX?/Lucas Oil Funny Car to a quarterfinal finish at the 9th annual Sears Craftsman NHRA Nationals at Gateway International Raceway.
Sunday's eliminations began late in the afternoon on what was arguably the hottest day of a sweltering weekend of racing at the Sears Craftsman Nationals. Bartone qualified the Got CMKX?/Lucas Oil Monte Carlo in the No. 10 position and faced Del Worsham in the first round of eliminations.
The opening round at the Sears Craftsman Nationals featured one tire-smoking battle after another and Bartone's race was no different. The Got CMKX?/Lucas Oil Funny Car was able to make it down the quarter-mile well enough to defeat Del Worsham with a 5.243 at 268.76 mph to his opponents 5.921 at 207.88 mph.
Bartone went up against Ron Capps in the second round. Both cars left the starting line together but the Got CMKX?/Lucas Oil Monte Carlo smoked the tires early in the run and Bartone's weekend was over.
"This was the hottest race we've had this season and it was evident by all the tire-smoking runs during the first round," said Bartone. "The Jim Dunn Racing team did an outstanding job this weekend. The heat was tremendous and the crew never missed a beat. We're happy to have made it to the quarterfinals given the conditions and we'll build on our momentum when we begin the western swing in Denver in a couple of weeks."
