DIAGEM is pleased to announce the results for weeks three and four of commercial mining operations carried out under an 'experimental mining' permit on the Fazenda Chicoria Diamondiferous Gravel Resource Block No.1 in the Juina Diamond Province, State of Mato Grosso, Brazil.
The two weeks of mining and processing, from September 1 to September 14, 2003, inclusive, have yielded diamonds weighing 378.90 carats. During the period production exceeding 50 carats per day occurred on four occasions. The two recovery plants have been tuned to function with great efficiency, very close to their design capacity. However, significant delays have been experienced in modifying the main plant jig box screen, which is now of a larger mesh size. 37% of the production was obtained during the last three days of the period. This shows the benefits gained as the two plants were progressively tuned.
The number of stones recovered was 1113, with an average size of 0.34 carat, which is very good. This includes 48 stones between 1 and 5 carats and 5 stones between 5 and 10 carats: 9.55, 7.16, 7.06, 7.05 and 5.30 respectively. The average grade was 0.24 ct/cu.m. This reflects the lower grade of gravels initially mined in the vicinity of the main plant.
It is a testament to our team that they have overcome a number of early challenges in the first four weeks of production to increase daily production from 20 to 50 carats. Some rain fell during the period that alleviated some of the pressing water problems. A bottleneck still exists at the Sortex due to excessive ilmenite content of the jig concentrate and due to the excessive amount of zircons that are excited with the diamonds after their exposure to X-rays. The installation of a second Sortex and the eventual addition of an electromagnetic separator will in due time solve most or all of these problems.
Diagem is a diamond exploration company holding significant diamond interests in Brazil and Canada. In Brazil it owns 20 properties totaling 130,000 hectares, in addition to the Joint Venture Property 1000, containing extensive diamondiferous gravels and 8 kimberlite pipes, located within the Juina Diamond Province, historically Brazil's largest diamond producing area. In Canada, through its interest in KWG Resources Inc. (TSXV: KWG), Diagem has an indirect interest in diamond exploration projects in the James Bay Lowlands and Wawa areas, in addition to the McFauld's Lake massive sulphide discovery, in Ontario.
