Atomenergie in Kanada
(Atomic Energy in Canada)
08.95 Uranium mining companies KATEP, Cameco and Uranerz have agreed to set up a joint venture company to exploit uranium deposits at Inkai and Mynkuduk in southern Kazakhstan. Each participant will take one third interest, the operator will be Uranerz and exports will be handled by KATEP with Uranerz and Cameco acting in the capacity of marketing agents
08.95 Cameco is exploring the possibility of extracting nickel and cobalt from mill tailings at Key Lake. Project costs are estimated at $45 million and laboratory tests to date have had excellent results. While nickel production would be small in world terms the project would see Cameco become a medium sized cobalt producer.
1996
Atomstromproduktion: 95.225 GWh
1997
1997: Canadian uranium exports, at 10 225 tU, were 11% down on 1996 but still 25% up on 1995, according to data released prior to publication of the Atomic Energy Control Board's 1997 Annual Report. The US was the final destination for 6187 tU, with 1986 tU going to Japan, the remainder going to European countries and South Korea. Total 1997 Canadian uranium production, according to data released by Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), was 12 031 tU, 2.3% up on 1996. Key Lake produced 5434 tU, Rabbit Lake 4663 tU and Cluff Lake 1964 tU. NRCan's reported total of shipments from Canadian producers was about 600 tU less than production, implying an increase in producer inventories
03.97 The government of Kazakstan has formed a new 100% state owned company to manage the state's interest `in all major uranium mining and processing enterprises'. The new company, KazAtomProm, has assumed the assets of KATEP, plus those of three mining administrations and the 51% state owned stake in the Ulba Metallurgical Plant, which produces nuclear fuel pellets. KazAtomProm will also take responsibility for the country's interests in KATEP's joint ventures with Cameco/Uranerz and with Cogema. Meanwhile, World Wide Minerals Ltd of Toronto has announced a joint venture between its subsidiary, KazUran, and KazAtomProm, to renovate and expand existing mines and to explore and develop deposits in southern Kazakstan. World Wide Minerals also said it will restart the uranium mill at Stepnogorsk later this month, expecting to produce 1.8 million pounds U3O8 (about 1.5 million tU) this year.
03.97 The federal-provincial panel reviewing Cameco's McArthur River uranium project approved the mining of McArthur River uranium ore and gave 'cautious' approval to the tailings management facility. While the panel supports the proposed in-pit disposal method, it is of the opinion that monitoring will be required for a 'much longer time' than suggested in the environmental impact statement. Cameco was pleased with the recommendations and acknowledged the panel's view that monitoring requirements, particularly after decommissioning, should not be underestimated. Following the panel's announcement, Bernard Michel, Cameco's chair, president and CEO, announced that McArthur River remains 'on track for construction to begin this summer for a 1999 production startup.
03.97 Petro Plus Inc announced that it has staked ten claims totalling 10 800 hectares within the northern Saskatchewan uranium-rich Athabasca Basin between Key Lake and Cigar Lake. These claims adjoin ground presently held by Cogema Resources Inc, Cameco Corporation, Uranerz Exploration and Mining Ltd and JNR Resources Inc.
05.97 Cameco has confirmed that it is involved in discussions with Minatom on alternative proposals for the disposition of fuel-grade uranium derived from the dismantling of Russian nuclear weapons, but denied an agreement has been reached. It had been reported that an agreement had been concluded between Minatom, Nukem, Cogema and Cameco.
05.97 The government of the province of Saskatchewan has conditionally approved the development of the McArthur River uranium project. Federal government approval is still required before the project can go ahead.
07.97 A decision on whether to issue a permit for Cameco's proposed McArthur River mine is expected from the Atomic Energy Control Board on 21 August. The project has already been approved by the federal and provincial governments.
08.97 The McArthur River uranium project has received regulatory approval from the country's Atomic Energy Control Board for construction to begin. The approval is the culmination of a 6 year review process to allow operator Cameco Corporation to construct surface and underground facilities and service infrastructure. The project, owned by Cameco (56%), Uranerz Exploration and Mining (28%) and Cogema Resources Inc. (16%), is host to the world's largest known high- grade uranium deposit. Operating licences from AECB and Saskatchewan provincial regulators will be required before the project starts up in 1999.
08.97 Cameco is to sell 4 million common shares for C$51.00 (around US$36) per share to an underwriting group representing many Canadian and US securities firms. Proceeds are expected to go towards expenditures related to the company's uranium business including development and exploration activities, product purchases, or the acquisition of further property interests.
09.97 World Wide Minerals (WWM) has announced that it will withdraw its efforts from Kazakhstan and pursue legal remedies arising out of 'illegal expropriation of its Kazakhstan agreements'. According to WWM, uranium will remain its core business as progress is being made at its Dornod property in Mongolia and it has become increasingly involved in uranium reserve expansion and the development of a 'strategic uranium inventory'. This follows an announcement that WWM has established a new 5 year working capital financing arrangement through Deutsche Morgan Grenfell. The arrangement calls for US$60 million in financing to be made available to WWM, with none to be used to finance activities in Kazakhstan.
