VANCOUVER, British Columbia--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 20, 1996-- CONSOLIDATED PINE CHAN (VSE: KPG)--Mr. Dale W. Hoffman, President of Consolidated Pine Channel Gold Corp. (the "Company") is pleased to announce that a fifth kimberlite pipe has been discovered in the ongoing Consolidated Pine Channel - JNR Resources Inc. joint venture exploration program in the New Liskeard - Cobalt area of northeastern Ontario - an area that offers an excellent infrastructure.
Diamond drilling on Seed I - DDH No. 1 intersected kimberlite at 17 feet, which was continuous to 517 feet, where the hole was stopped in kimberlite. On completion of preliminary outline drilling of the target, samples from this target as well as from the recently drilled kimberlite on Glinker No. 1 will be sent to the De Beers laboratory in South Africa for complete evaluation. Samples evaluation will also continue here in Canada.
To date, samples from a total of five kimberlite pipes are under evaluation at various laboratories, with work being done by De Beers, in South Africa, and by Kennecott Canada and Lakefield Research. Consolidated Pine Channel and JNR Resources have been advised that analysis results from the first samples from OPAP (22 acres, as shallow as 12 feet, 1 km from paved road, 3 km from major powerline), C-31 and BKF#1, sent to the De Beers laboratories in South Africa as well as various facilities in Canada, will be available by month's end, and a complete evaluation of these results will be available during the first week in April.
Preliminary results from the OPAP pipe have been received from William Griffin, in Australia. After personal discussions and a review of the data, Dr. Bram Janse, the Company's diamond consultant, has made the following statement:
"The results from nickel thermometer investigations on garnet and chromite from OPAP indicate that the pipe is diamondiferous, in comparing results received, with those of known producing areas of the world.
"The best example is the Limpopo Belt, located straddling the border between South Africa and Zimbabwe. The Limpopo Belt contains the large (12.6 ha) Venesia mine which started diamond production in 1991 and is located on the southern margin in South Africa and the smaller (5.2 ha) River Ranch mine, which started production in 1992 and is located in the northern margin of the belt in Zimbabwe. The River Ranch has a moderate grade but contains occasional large diamonds (well over 100 carats). This makes the report of the find of the large Nipissing diamond more credible (This diamond was reputedly found in 1906, in glacial deposits at Sharp Lake, located in the southern part of the general area).
"At the present stage of information, it is not possible to categorically predict that an economic kimberlite pipe exists in the area. However, weighing all known facts: a) OPAP is estimated to be diamondiferous; b) many other promising air/ground magnetic anomalies represent good drill targets; c) the example of the Limpopo Belt which contains two producing diamond mines; d) the reputed find of a large diamond; I think that it is very well warranted to prospect the area in detail and it is quite within the range of possibilities that an economic kimberlite of moderate grade containing occasional large stones (similar to River Ranch) will be found in the area."
In addition, in a memo received from Julie Kong, of Monopros, regarding the logging of core and a brief analysis of a report by Keith Barron on the mineral chemistry of the indicators from the kimberlite pipes found to date, Kong suggests that the OPAP has the potential to host diamonds. She feels that the BKF No. 1 and C-31 pipes have lesser potential, with further work need. Kong strongly recommends that all pipes found to date should be analyzed for microdiamonds, and states "analyzing for microdiamonds is an essential step in assessing the economic potential of a kimberlite before committing to an expensive bulk sampling program."
Drilling completed on our Casey Township project has intersected 250 feet of mineralization from the Nipissing diabase - which forms part of the structure noted for cobalt/silver mining in that area (core now out for assay). In addition, 80 feet of kimberlitic-looking material was found when core-logging took place on Casey No. 8. Full evaluation of this material is ongoing. Casey No. 8 lies north-west along strike from the diamond recently reported by Ditem Exploration.
Further information on the northeast Ontario diamond exploration project will be released as soon as it becomes available.
