8/18/2004 : Arend and the CMKXtreme Machine team remain focused on winning entering Memphis
MEMPHIS, pre-race: CMKXtreme Machine Funny Car driver Jeff Arend will be making his first visit to Memphis Motorsports Park this weekend to compete at the 17th annual O'Reilly NHRA Mid-South Nationals. Arend is seeking to extend his nine-race qualifying streak and begin his climb into the Top 15 in the NHRA POWERade Drag Racing Series point standings.
"As long as we keep qualifying it's only a matter of time before the CMKXtreme Machine starts going rounds on Sunday," said Arend following last weekend's race in Brainerd, Minn. The 41-year-old Canadian native qualified for his ninth consecutive race and 11th national event of the season in Brainerd before being taken out by John Force in the first round. Arend had the better reaction time against Force but the CMKXtreme Machine overpowered the track and Arend was denied his first round win of the season again.
"Paul Smith and the crew haven't let up once this year and all of their hard work is going to pay off sooner or later. If there is such a thing as racing luck the CMKX team sure hasn't seen any this season."
Smith had Arend use two different bodies on the CMKXtreme Machine during qualifying in Brainerd, the Chevrolet Corvette and the Pontiac Firebird, but they elected to go with the Corvette during eliminations. "We decided to go with the Corvette on race day because its lighter than the Firebird body and we already have a decent tune up for it," explained Arend.
Arend and the team expect another impressive showing of CMKX shareholders for the Mid-South Nationals. "The turnout of shareholders gets bigger at every race," Arend said. "Its really cool to see all the CMKX T-shirts in the pit area. I have my own little cheering section at every race, it makes me feel like I'm always at my home track."
Arend will join CMKXtreme team members Connie Cohen and Tony Bartone on a visit to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis on Friday morning prior to qualifying. They'll visit with the patients and their parents and donate CMKXtreme Machine souvenirs to the hospital.
