10/9/2004 : Cohen continues to gain consistency despite missing the field in Reading
READING, qualifying: CMKXtreme Machine Pro Stock Bike rider Connie Cohen gave it a valiant effort but she came up short in qualifying at the 20th annual Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals in Pennsylvania. Cohen will now prepare to travel to the west coast for the final two races on the 2004 POWERade Drag Racing Series schedule.
The Cohen’s arrived at the Lucas Oil Nationals transporting their CMKXtreme Suzuki in a brand new trailer. The beautiful 28-foot trailer and its spacious surroundings will give the team more room to work and represent a more professional image for the CMKX team.
Cohen began her second weekend at the Lucas Oil Nationals with a 7.322 at 177.25 mph, improving on her performance by more than two-tenths of a second from her first run at the event three weeks early. Cohen finish Friday’s first qualifying session in the No. 22 position. The Connecticut resident returned for her second qualifying attempt late Friday afternoon and the CMKXtreme Suzuki remained consistent with a 7.335 at 179.80 mph, but Cohen dropped one spot on the qualifying ladder to the 23rd position.
Crew chief Marc Cohen was looking to establish consistency and improve the performance of the CMKXtreme Suzuki during the final two qualifying sessions on Saturday. With cool temperatures and overcast skies, the conditions were just right for a strong run.
Cohen’s performance fell off during her third qualifying attempt and she slowed to a 7.401 at 162.72 mph, falling to the No. 23 position with one qualifying shot remaining to make the 16-bike elimination field on Sunday. On her final attempt, Cohen got out of the groove near half-track and was forced to shut off early and abort the run.
“We went into this race just looking to find some consistency,” said Cohen following qualifying. “We spent a lot of time preparing our new trailer for this event and now we want to concentrate on the bike and performing well for all of the folks from CMKX in Las Vegas and Pomona. It’s only a matter of time before we get our CMKX Suzuki to run competitively”
