11/6/2004 : Hatch Goes Back to School
Just two days prior to winning his second consecutive ASA Speed Truck championship, Lee Hatch made an appearance at Badillo Elementary School in Covina, Calif., on Thursday, Oct 28 during the school’s Red Ribbon week.
Hatch's seven-year-old niece, Brooke McClure, is a second grader at the California school. Hatch brought out his red No. 91 ASA Speed Truck for the children to see up close, and signed autographs and took pictures with the young race fans. He also participated in a Q&A session with the children about his racing career and the series he is involved in.
"It was neat seeing all the excited kids," Hatch said. “When I fired up the truck to pull it out of the trailer, I could see all the kids jumping up and down. I was actually up most the night before getting ready for the Vegas race (which started a couple of days later), but I quickly woke up seeing over a hundred smiles waiting for me.
“I remember when I was their age racing Karts and how much race car drivers inspired me,” Hatch added. “I hope I was able to inspire some of the kids to follow their dreams and to never give up on them.
“I was honored to have the opportunity to visit the school during their Red Ribbon Week. I felt like they were all on my team wearing red. My niece, Brooke, comes to almost every one of my races wearing her red team shirt and she's definitely part of our race team, along with the whole family. I'm glad I was able to come meet her classmates and make her show-and-tell a special one."
A local racetrack, Irwindale (Calif.) Speedway, generously donated 200 tickets and story books for Hatch to give each child along with his hero cards.
Badillo Elementary School’s Red Ribbon Week is a unified and visible commitment to make America drug-free, and was celebrated from Oct. 23-31. It is a national program honoring the memory of Enrique "Kiki" Camerena for making the ultimate sacrifice in the war against drugs.
