3/21/2005 : Bartone drops close first round race at the Gatornationals Courtesy of Bill Walters CMKXtreme Racing
GAINESVILLE, post-race: Jim Dunn Racing/Got CMKX?/Lucas Oil Funny Car driver driver Tony Bartone lost in the first round of eliminations at the 36th annual NHRA Mac Tools Gatornationals at Gainesville Raceway in Florida.
The Got CMKX?/Lucas Oil Funny Car qualified in the No. 13 position with a 4.962 at 315.90 mph. Bartone faced Del Worsham during the first round of eliminations with Worsham deciding lane choice. Perfect drag racing weather greeted the tremendous overflow Gainesville crowd on Sunday. Bartone and Worsham were the third pair of fuel floppers to battle it out down the quarter-mile in the first round.
Worsham had the jump off the starting line and extended his lead over Bartone to the finish line with a 4.886 at 320.39 to Bartone’s early shut off 4.970 at 273.05 mph.
“Our combination is finally coming around,” said assistant crew chief Jon Dunn. “It’s exciting racing here in Gainesville and we feel like the Got CMKX?/Lucas Oil Funny Car is becoming a real contender.”
“In the first round against Worsham, the cars were pretty even at half track but Bartone felt the tires start slipping around the thousand-foot mark and wisely clicked it off early and Worsham took the win. We feel positive in the direction we’re headed and we can hardly wait to get to Houston in two weeks.”
