BRISTOL, qualifying: Tony Bartone made his quickest run of the year at the O’Reilly NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals on Saturday to qualify the Jim Dunn Racing/Got CMKX?/Lucas Oil Funny Car in the top half of the field for Sunday’s eliminations.
Bartone and the crew of the Got CMKX?/Lucas Oil Funny Car entered the Thunder Valley Nationals fresh off of their runner-up finish in Las Vegas two weeks earlier. It was Bartone’s 53rd career final round appearance covering three classes (Funny Car, Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car) the team built on their momentum at Bristol Dragway.
Bartone made a solid run on his first qualifying attempt, roaring to his quickest elapsed time of the season with a 4.878 at 314.61 mph to anchor the top half of the field in the No. 8 spot. The rain returned just after the first session ended. The NHRA called an end to qualifying at 5:30, and the field was set after only one run.
“The run we made today was absolutely fantastic,” said Bartone. “We made a solid opening lap and that has created a good news, bad news situation for CMKX. Both cars qualified and that’s the good news, but the bad news is that we face each other in the first round. One of the CMKX cars will be going to the second round tomorrow and hopefully it will be me.” Bartone will have lane choice over his first round opponent, Jeff Arend, the driver of the other CMKX Funny Car.
