Arend qualifies the CMKXtreme Machine No. 2 with career-best run
ENGLISHTOWN, qualifying: CMKXtreme Machine Funny Car driver Jeff Arend made the quickest and fastest run of his career to qualify for the 36th annual K & N Filters NHRA SuperNationals. Arend enjoyed his finest qualifying effort of the season, finishing in the No. 2 position for Sunday’s 16-car elimination field.
Arend kicked off the weekend at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park with a cylinder-dropping 4.945 at 299.46 mph, finishing Friday’s first qualifying session in the No. 9 position. Crafty veteran crew chief Paul Smith turned up the wick on the CMKXtreme Machine Monte Carlo for the evening session and the results were spectacular. Arend thundered to the quickest and fastest run of his career with a blistering 4.792 at 322.19 mph to end the day high atop the 16-car field in the No. 2 spot.
Saturday was a spectacular day for drag racing at the SuperNationals with gorgeous weather and huge crowds on hand to soak up the action. Arend was on another strong run on his third qualifying attempt but lifted before the finish line, slowing to a 5.085 at 222.36 mph. The 42-year-old Canadian native remained perched in the No. 2 position. The CMKXtreme Machine had the quickest elapsed time and the fastest speed of the session at half-track.
The CMKXtreme Machine team chose to skip the final qualifying session and prepare for Sunday's eliminations, where Arend will face Whit Bazemore in round one.
"The CMKXtreme Machine has been running consistent all year," said Arend after qualifying ended. "We've been able to run low 4.90's and high 4.80's with no problem. Now we seem to be running consistently in the low 4.80's. Paul Smith has a great handle on the tune up and the team gets stronger at every race. Right now it feels like there isn't a car we can't beat. Whit Bazemore isn't exactly the guy who you'd expect to race when you qualify number two because that team is really strong."
"We'll go out and give it our best shot tomorrow and hopefully we'll win some rounds and keep clawing toward the top 10,' added Arend. "I've got a 10 year old jinx that I'm looking to break tomorrow."
The CMKXtreme Machine team enjoyed hospitality during the weekend from associate sponsor, Vinny Ferrone of VF Trucking out of the Port of New York and New Jersey. Ferrone entertained friends and family in special remembrance of the his late friend, Bobby Sevret.
